When should you transition to a toddler bed?

There is no exact date for when to transition a toddler to their first bed. For most, this little adventure begins between 18 months and 3 years. You may find it's the right time to transition them when they're starting to climb out of their cot or need more room as they grow bigger. Whenever you choose to make the transition, remember that it's simply another wonderful new chapter in their sleep journey.

At Cuckooland, our collection of toddler beds can naturally ease your child into transitioning from a cot to their first bed. It's a magical journey with a whole array of possibilities, from themed beds to single and double beds, all created with comfort and quality in mind.

How to transition from a cot to a toddler bed

The most important aspect is to remember that it's a celebration! This is their first big step into a 'big kid' room, so you should do what you can to make them comfortable with the idea. Talk about it with them before making the transition - try to explain as best as you can what will happen and, if needed, let them "help" choose the bed or at least their cosy duvet cover.

Let them see you build it to reassure them that it's completely safe. The most important thing is to ensure that the rest of their bedtime routine remains the same - the same bath time, the same bedtime stories, the same cuddly toys to help them get to sleep. You don't want to change too much too quickly, so keeping the routine the same will help them ease into the change and begin to see the added benefits of more room and more freedom. This makes the new bed an exciting addition, not a scary replacement.

Did you know that some cots transform into toddler beds? Cot beds are an excellent way to help ease children into this gradual transition.

What size is a toddler bed?

A toddler bed is a cosy, comfortable in-between size - bigger than a cot but smaller than a full-size bed. There is no small toddler bed, as they all tend to be the same size. Toddler bed mattresses are usually the same size as cot beds (around 70cm x 140cm). To learn more about kids’ mattresses, check out our kids’ mattress guide.

See below for a comparison chart between cots and toddler beds:

Bed Type Dimensions Recommended Age
Crib 60cm x 120cm (2'0" x 4'0") From birth to around 2 years old
Cot 60cm x 120cm (2'0" x 4'0") From birth to around 2 years old
Cot Bed 70cm x 140cm (2'3" x 4'7") Around 18 months to 4 years old
Toddler Bed 70cm x 140cm (2'3" x 4'7") Around 18 months to 4 years old

What age is a toddler bed for?

Generally, a toddler bed is the perfect sleeping companion for your little one from 18 months to around 4 or 5 years old. Think of it as a stepping stone - the bed size means that it's comfortable for them for the next few years, while other additions, like teething rails, can help them adjust to their new surroundings as they get used to the change. Once they start looking too big for their cosy toddler bed, you can start thinking of the next transition to a kids' single bed. Again, similar to the cot to bed transition, there is no exact time for it - the important thing is ensuring your little one is comfy enough to sleep peacefully in their own bed.

What bed should a 2-year-old have?

At two years old, it's all about safety, security, and comfort, along with a healthy dose of imagination! The best beds for toddlers are low to the ground, meaning that any accidental falls are just little ones. If you are concerned about the bed size, there's no need to worry - bed rails can help prevent accidents at night. Many of our kids’ beds have bed rails built into the bed frame.

Toddler bed materials

You want materials made from quality craftsmanship that are perfect for bouncing and playing and that complement the bedroom decor. A natural wood finish is lovely for creating a calm, modern, neutral aesthetic that will grow with them. Our toddler beds are made from durable, high-quality materials with non-toxic finishes and child-friendly designs, so you rest easy knowing they'll sleep in a bed that is as well-made as it is comfy and cosy!

How long does a toddler bed last?

A toddler bed is for when your child is too big for a cot but not quite big enough for a single bed. These beds will see your child through a really key developmental stage, usually around two to three years. Solid construction, fun designs, a smaller-sized bed frame, and familiar mattress softness help create a cosy and reassuring sleeping environment. When you see them sleeping diagonally or with their feet hanging out of the bed, you'll know they'll be ready for the next stage in their sleeping journey!

Do toddler beds include storage?

Some toddler beds do come with storage. Equipped with trundle drawers, they offer ample storage for clothes and toys, helping to keep the space clutter-free. Your little munchkin comes with a lot of stuff, and these space savers are a great way to free up floor space, helping your kids' bedroom remain clean and tidy.

Are toddler beds safe?

At Cuckooland, your little one's safety is our top priority. Our toddler beds are built so they are low to the ground, making it easy for your little adventurer to get in and out of bed and use high-quality materials to ensure they are fit for purpose and meet all required safety standards. Most come with built-in safety rails or side panels to prevent nighttime tumbles. Most importantly, they are the perfect size for toddlers and kids as they ease into the idea of sleeping in a junior bed whilst remaining comfy and cosy in a space they can call their own.

Where should a toddler bed be placed in a room?

With children's beds, you want to create a cosy, little safe nest so they can sleep and dream peacefully. The best spot is usually against a wall, away from windows, radiators, blinds or natural light. Placing it against a wall makes it less likely they will roll out of bed and provides more floor space for their toys and other fun activities!

When can a toddler have a pillow?

It's best to wait until your little adventurer is two years old before introducing a pillow into their nighttime routine. You should start with a small, relatively firm toddler pillow. If you want to introduce bedding, we recommend a light, airy cotton blanket to begin with, to keep them comfortable as they fall to sleep.

Whether you want a girl's toddler bed or a boy's toddler bed, our collection has something for everyone! Mid-sleeper beds, cabin beds, bunk beds, and novelty beds are all excellent options for helping your little one get the perfect night's sleep.

Flair Zoom Small Single Bunk Bed
Well impressed with these bunk beds. Did a lot of research before selecting the Flair Zoom mostly due to size restriction and reviews on quality. This is very sturdy indeed. Quality of frame is excellent and it sits very solidly on the floor. Extremely heavy which makes it virtually immovable. Exactly whats needed with a 7 year old and nearly 4 year old grandchild. A great buy!
