Armchair vs accent chair: what is the difference?
Armchairs and accent chairs are both single seats, and many chairs could be called either. The difference is mainly about purpose: comfort first, or style first.
Armchairs: comfort first
An armchair is a fully upholstered chair with arms, designed for sitting in for a long time: reading, watching TV or a nap. They're usually deeper and more padded, and often match or complement a sofa. Our armchairs come from Swyft, SOLACE+CO, LPD Home and Living and Home.
Accent chairs: style first
An accent chair is chosen to add colour, shape or texture to a room. It may be more compact, with or without arms, and often has a statement fabric such as boucle or velvet, or an unusual silhouette. It's a seat, but also a design piece.
Side by side
| Armchair | Accent chair | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Comfortable everyday seating | Adds style, colour or an extra seat |
| Size | Usually larger and deeper | Often more compact |
| Arms | Yes | Sometimes |
| Where | Living rooms, snugs, reading corners | Bedrooms, hallways, beside a sofa, home offices |
How to choose
- How long will you sit in it? For an evening of reading or TV, choose an armchair. For perching to put on shoes or chat, an accent chair is fine.
- Seat height and depth: check both against the person who'll use it most. Taller people prefer deeper seats; a higher seat is easier to get out of.
- Space: measure the spot and leave room to walk around. Compact accent chairs suit bedrooms and corners.
- Arms: arms give support getting up and down; armless chairs take less width.
Styling tips
- Match or contrast? An armchair in the same fabric as the sofa looks calm. A contrasting colour or texture creates a focal point.
- Pick up a colour from a rug, cushion or artwork. See edits of green, blue and grey armchairs.
- Pair with a side table and a lamp for a reading corner.
- Add a footstool to turn either chair into a lounging spot.
Fabrics
Velvet and boucle are popular for accent chairs because they make a statement; hard-wearing weaves suit an everyday armchair. Our fabrics guide compares them and our care guide keeps them looking good.
Armchairs in a box
Some armchairs arrive flat-packed and assemble in the room, just like a sofa in a box, which helps with narrow stairs and flats. Check the delivery details on the product page.
Where to put a single chair
- Beside the sofa at a slight angle, so people can talk easily.
- Facing the sofa across a coffee table, for a sociable layout.
- In a corner with a lamp and side table, for a reading nook.
- In a bedroom by the window or at the foot of the bed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an armchair and an accent chair?
An armchair is a fully upholstered chair with arms designed for comfort over long periods. An accent chair is chosen mainly to add style, colour or texture, and may be more compact or armless.
Should an armchair match the sofa?
It doesn't have to. Matching gives a calm look; a contrasting colour or texture creates a focal point. Tie it in with a colour from a rug or cushions.
Are accent chairs comfortable?
Many are, but they're often more compact than armchairs. Check the seat height and depth, and choose an armchair if you plan to sit for long periods.
