UK bed sizes explained

Bed sizes are named by mattress size, and UK and European sizes differ. Use this chart before you choose a bed, mattress or bedding.

European (EU) sizes

Many continental beds use European mattress sizes, which are usually 200cm long. Common sizes are EU single (90 x 200cm), EU double (140 x 200cm) and EU king (160 x 200cm). A UK mattress won't fit an EU frame properly (and vice versa), so always check which size a bed takes on its product page.

How to choose a bed size

  • Measure the room, then the bed's external dimensions: frames, headboards and footboards add to the mattress size.
  • Leave walking space around the bed and room for bedside tables, wardrobe doors and drawers to open.
  • Think about who sleeps there. Taller sleepers may prefer a 200cm-long king or super king.
  • Match your bedding to the mattress size, and check mattress depth for fitted sheets.

Kids' beds and mattress depth

Bunk beds, high sleepers and mid sleepers state a maximum mattress depth. This keeps the safety rail high enough above the mattress, so stick to it. See our bunk bed safety checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a UK double bed?

A UK double mattress is 135 x 190cm (4ft 6in x 6ft 3in).

Is a king size bigger than a double?

Yes. A UK king is 150 x 200cm, 15cm wider and 10cm longer than a double.

Will a UK mattress fit an EU bed?

Usually not. EU sizes are generally 200cm long and have different widths (for example an EU double is 140 x 200cm), so check the size a bed takes before buying a mattress.
