Caring for velvet and boucle furniture
Velvet and boucle are two of the most popular upholstery fabrics. A little routine care keeps them looking their best.
Always start with the care label
Manufacturers' care instructions come first; they know the fabric and any treatments used. The tips below are general.
Velvet
- Vacuum regularly with a soft brush attachment, working with the direction of the pile.
- Blot spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth. Don't rub.
- Brush out pressure marks gently with a soft clothes brush.
- Keep out of strong direct sunlight to protect the colour.
Boucle
- Vacuum with a soft brush attachment to lift dust from the loops.
- If a loop is pulled, snip it level with small scissors rather than pulling it.
- Blot spills promptly and follow the care label for any spot cleaning.
Everyday habits
- Turn and plump cushions regularly so they wear evenly.
- Keep sharp objects, buckles and studs away from the fabric.
