2018 Trend FAQs
Trends always inspire questions, so we’ve gone to the trouble of answering some of the big ones below. Take a look and see…
What are the biggest interior design trends of 2018?
The interior design world has seen the emergence of several key trends in the run-up to spring and summer 2018. Sage Green has emerged as one of our most coveted colours of 2018. Could it replace grey as our favourite neutral this year? Meanwhile Pantone’s Colour of 2018 is Ultraviolet – a bold and vibrant purple that fits with the current ‘maximalism’ trend, adding a pop of colour wherever it goes.
Furniture seems to be remaining dark, and Herringbone print is experiencing a revival. This looks especially good with brass, which has replaced copper as our favourite metal. Brass is also a key part of another 2018 trend – Art Deco. In a nod to Great Gatsby-esque glamour, this year looks set to experience an abundance of retro-style furniture, black and brass lighting, and geometrics.
What about Hygge – is that still a thing?
The Danish ‘cosiness’ concept of Hygge really exploded in 2016, and has dominated the last two years of interior design. It has also lead to an increased awareness of other cultural concepts, which have been vying to replace Hygge as the number one lifestyle-to-live-by. Last year, Lagom (the Swedish word for ‘just-enough’) was popular, and this year, it looks like the Japanese ‘Wabi-Sabi’ might just knock Hygge off the top spot. Wabi-Sabi is all about getting back to authenticity, and appreciating the beauty in age and imperfection. For interiors, this means lots of natural materials, reclaimed furniture, handmade crockery (with a few chips!) and bespoke creations that tell a story.
What colours do I need to know about for 2018?
As well as Ultraviolet and Sage Green, other colours likely to be making their way into our homes this year include Terracotta – a cosy orange, warming orange - and the ever-popular Blush Pink, which shows no sign of relaxing its vice grip on interior design for 2018. This year’s variation is the Dulux Colour of the Year, Heart Wood, which is a duskier shade, with hints of heather. Dark colours such as Navy and Lead Grey are also looking popular, in a definite rebellion against the ‘all-things-Scandi-and-white’ trend.
How can I easily integrate these interior design trends into my home?
Regardless of the space and budget available, everyone should be able to able to find a way to integrate 2018 trends into their home. Take time to consider which of your rooms might already support a particular trend, meaning less work will be required. For example, if your living room has lots of dark wood furniture, adding a herringbone coffee table or glass art deco-style light could simply accentuate your existing style. Meanwhile, if your room is very white and Scandinavian, some Sage Green chairs or houseplants in terracotta pots might work better.
