1. What Size Bed Does My Child Need and When Does a Child Need a Bigger Bed?

This is dependent on your child’s development. Here at Cuckooland, we try to include the recommended age range on each of our kid’s beds, but this is just a guide! Kids are all different and they grow up at varying rates. We have toddler beds, right up to small double beds and adult sizes. Generally, though, we would advise Bunks Beds and High Sleeper Beds are for children aged 6 and up and Mid Sleeper and Cabin Beds are for kiddies 4 and up. Speak to your kids and see if they’re ready for new furniture. If they’re itching to get a bigger bed, you’re noticing they’re needing more from their sleep space (desks, storage etc.) or their furniture is looking tired and unloved, it’s time to upgrade!

2. Should my Child Have a Double Bed?

If you have the space – a double bed can be a great addition for kids! If your child enjoys company before nodding off, you enjoy reading together, having you close by brings reassurance when they’re unwell or suffer from night terrors, then you can always jump in if they need you. A kid’s double bed is also great for sleepovers and utilising more floor space and can save you money down the line. And double beds are great for growing teens! Extra room to stretch out is always a winner, but sometimes this added space can feel scary for youngsters, so a small double might be a great alternative or stick to a kid’s single bed if they’d prefer a cosier setup. Only you and your kids know if a double bed is the right choice though, so have a chat about it and see if it’s suitable!

3. What Type of Kid's Bed is Best for Small Rooms?

If square footage is not in your favour, look for a kid’s bed that will utilise the floor space! Look for storage beds and save on added furniture in the room. By picking a bed with built-in storage, all in one hub, there will be more floor space for other things. Bunk Beds are great if your kids are sharing space, High Sleepers often feature desks and extra storage, Cabin Beds are packed with shelving, drawers and hidden compartments and added trundle drawers will solve all of your storage needs. Use the height of the room and pack in as many cool features as you can! Take caution though, with these added additions don’t forget to check the measurements for pull out drawers and opening doors – they’ll need to fit in too!

4. What Should I Look For in a Kid's Bed?

Does it have safety features?

Kids love to sleep! They get around 10-12 hours a night so picking out a safe spot for them to sleep is essential. Our fantastic Kids Bed selection has each been safety tested to the highest standards, but there are a few other things to consider. Always check the recommended age range before making a final selection and take note of maximum weight thresholds. When choosing a bed with a ladder, check the width, if it has handles and step grips. Does your youngster need a bed guard or rail? Is the mattress thickness suitable for the bed design. We’ll always try to give as much guidance as possible along the way, but if you’d like to know more about a specific bed, we’d love to reassure you!

Does it have storage?

When you have kids storage is essential. As they’re growing, so will their clothes, shoes, toys and trinkets. By opting for a bed with added storage you can better utilise the floor space and leave the room clear for playing and activities. Many of our beds at Cuckooland include shelves, drawers, wardrobes and trundle drawers (great for sleepovers if they can hold a mattress). We even have beds with desks – great for homework and hobbies and helping save more space in the kid’s bedrooms.

Is it durable?

Kids’ beds need to be able to withstand the liveliest of little ones. Bouncing on the bed is to be expected – so you need to pick out a design that can withstand bumps, bangs, scrapes and scuffs. If you have your eye on a kid’s bed, check the materials it’s made from, weight threshold and recommended age if durability is important! And if you’re unsure you can always contact our customer service team for advice – we can provide instructions, support and recommend suitable alternatives if something isn’t the right fit for your youngster!

Recommended age range?

This is an important one as not every kid’s bed is right for every age! You will know your little one’s limits and capabilities, but checking the age range gives you a rough guide when picking out a kid’s bed. Generally, we’d recommend Mid Sleeper Beds are great for kids 4 years and up and Bunk Beds or High Sleepers are suitable from 6+ years of age! Always double-check the recommended age on a design as this can change depending on the specifications and mattress size.

Does it fit?

Seems like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised how often we all underestimate the size of new furniture! We’d recommend triple checking those measurements! Be wary of kid’s bed features like wardrobes, trundle drawers and cabinets – these need to be accounted for when calculating your measurements. How far does the drawer come out and will the kid’s bedrooms be big enough for it? If you’re ever unsure and trying to wrap your head around how a kid’s bed will fit, we’re always here to help you! Give us a call or an email and we’ll find the perfect fit for your kids.

What Mattress does the bed require?

This leads us nicely onto mattress sizes. Here at Cuckooland, we have European and UK kid’s beds and the dimensions can really vary. Check and double-check the specifications to find the best fit. Bunk beds, High Sleeper Beds and Mid Sleepers often have a maximum mattress thickness, to ensure your kids can sleep safely and avoid accidents. We’ll always try and recommend a mattress, but if you’re still puzzled, let us know!

Is it future proof?

This is a big one because who really wants to be buying and building new furniture every year? By picking a bed with a long life span and a design that can easily adapt to your kid’s changing style and interests is a must. A kid’s bed is a great investment if you choose the right one. When they’re young, beds with all the bells and whistles might make your little one’s eyes light up now, but in a few years, they might have outgrown the design. Check if the frame can be converted once a stage has been outgrown, or pick a kid’s bed that has useful features that they can enjoy for years to come – like pull out desks, trundle drawers and shelving!

5. How Do I Transition My Child to a Bigger Bed?

Making the move from a cot or toddler bed to a bigger kids bed can often be a really daunting prospect for any child! Their first bed was their safe space, they’ve not known anything different! Taking the step to a larger bed can be turned into a really exciting idea with a few easy steps.

Select a kid’s bed with fun features – By picking out a bed with lots of fun features, the dread of heading up to bed will be completely removed. Their bedroom is for sleeping, but it can be a great place to play and express themselves too! Kids beds with slides, novelty kids beds, treehouse beds and tepee beds make bedtimes a joy! If one of these beds awaits them, they’ll want to rush right up to bed and get snuggled under the covers.

Add a guard rail – With the addition of a guard rail on one or both sides of the bed, it can ease those anxieties about night-time tumbles! Cot and toddler beds create a safe nest and by moving a little one into a bed with no sides can be a really scary notion for youngsters. Here at Cuckooland, many of our kid’s beds come with guard rail options or the ability to add safety rails and keep tots sleeping soundly in their new bed and encourage independence. And when they’re not needed anymore, they can just as easily be taken off!

Style with fun and practical bedding – By adding funky new bedding to their new bed will instantly get kiddies racing up and jumping under the covers! With lots of themes, styles and colours to choose from, pick something to showcase their interests. There are lots of materials to pick from too, some better than others. If you opt for bedding made of natural fibres, these designs will help regulate their temperature while they rest and can be hypoallergenic and antibacterial, all helping your kids get the best night’s sleep. A mattress protector is also a great addition when first moving up to a ‘big kids’ bed. Night-time accidents are inevitable, by adding a mattress protector it will ease their worries and your youngster will feel more comfortable!
