Wardrobe buying checklist
A wardrobe is a big piece to get wrong. Run through this checklist before you buy.
- Height: measure floor to ceiling, and allow for coving, sloping ceilings and light fittings.
- Width and depth: check skirting boards and radiators where it will stand.
- Doors: hinged doors need room to swing open; sliding doors don't, but only half the wardrobe is open at once.
- Inside: how much do you hang versus fold? Look at rails, shelves and drawers.
- Delivery and assembly: check boxes will fit through doors and up stairs, and that there's room to stand the wardrobe up after assembly.
- Safety: secure tall wardrobes to the wall with the fixings supplied, especially in children's rooms.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I need extra height when assembling a wardrobe?
Many wardrobes are built lying down and then stood up, so they need clearance diagonally as well as straight up. Check the assembly instructions.
