Top Tips for a Calm & Tranquil Nursery

For new parents, feeling ‘calm’ might seem like a distant memory. With exciting ‘firsts’ each day and a non-stop cycle of feeds, those early months can pass by in a rather frenzied (albeit lovely) blur.

But when you create a tranquil environment, you and your baby can enjoy a slice of serene in the midst of your busy routine. With calming colours and comfortable furniture, you’ll find it easier to take five, relax, and bond with your little one.

Avoid overstimulating colours

Bold and bright colours are great for sensory play. But when you’re trying to relax, they’re not as great…

So when it comes to stimulating your baby, it’s best to use bright toys – and stick to pale, neutral, or pastel tones for your nursery decor instead. It means you can stash the bright colours aside when you’re finished with play, and enjoy a more soothing colour palette when it’s time to relax.

Use watery blue tones

Did you know that being near watery spaces can calm you down? Scientific studies show that blue spaces – like a lake, pool, or the seaside – have a positive impact on our mental health. And it’s not just down to that Mr Whippy…

When we see the colour blue, we instinctively feel that we’re in a calm and safe environment. So to add a sense of tranquil to your baby’s nursery, bring those watery tones indoors. With soothing properties, blue accessories and walls can help ease a busy mind.

And not only that, but blue is one of the best colours for helping us switch off and sleep. So if you’re looking for nursery colours for your baby, you can’t go far wrong with blue…

Go for natural wood accessories

According to studies in Norway, Japan, Canada, and Austria, being around natural wood can help us calm down. Marjut Wallenius, Doctor of Psychology at the University of Tampere, claims:

“Wooden surfaces make a room feel warmer and cosier and they also have a calming effect. In these properties, wood beats all other normal surface materials”

Apparently, touching wooden surfaces can make us feel safer and closer to nature. So when it comes to kitting out a new nursery, you and your baby will feel cosy and calm around natural wood.

Add soft and cosy textures

Not only are soft textures great for sensory play, but they’re perfect for creating a calm nursery. Soft accessories like blankets and teddies are naturally soothing to touch for babies.

Introduce some nature to your nursery

Being around nature, or even just looking at scenes of nature, instantly boosts our mood and helps us relax. And while it’s easiest to get your fix of nature outdoors, your baby can still enjoy the calming effects of nature in their nursery.

Houseplants are scientifically proven to reduce stress levels. With mood-boosting and air-purifying properties, plants are a must for creating a calm nursery. So embrace your green fingers, dot some houseplants around your nursery, and relax.

Naturally-inspired accessories can improve your mood, too. Whether it’s shells or flowers, little pieces of nature can make us feel calm and connected to natural life.

A clutter-free nursery clears your mind

A clutter-free nursery can mean a clutter-free mind. With less distractions and messy toys spilling over the floor, it’s easier for both you and your baby to unwind.

But when you’re busy looking after a newborn, keeping your nursery tidy isn’t always number one on your to-do list. That’s why it’s good to keep a selection of handy storage baskets and containers to quickly stash away any mind-cluttering mess.

The lovely bear basket from Bloomingville (below) is perfect for keeping stray bits and pieces tidy. It’s cute, it’s fun, and it’s lovingly made with only natural materials to help you stick to a neutral theme.
