The Interior Trends Coming to Your Home

The IMM Cologne was all about mixing trends: Metallics were seen mixed with pastels in soft furnishings; Herringbone patterns appeared on Retro and Scandi furniture; rough leather upholstery was combined with distressed copper frames. Read on for our pick of key trends!

Trend: CHERISHED GOLD & OPULENCE

Metallics are as hot as ever, with the trend moving away from cool silvers towards warmer brass, gold and copper accents. The influence of the Dulux colour of the Year Cherished Gold was evident across lighting and accessories, with the element being used creatively in dip dyed table legs and brass clock hands. Golds were mixed with deep, opulent colours such as emerald green and indigo blue – a shade set to be huge.

Trend: MANMADE VS. EARTHMADE

A recurring trend at the show was natural, earthy interiors which combined organic and man-made elements. Roughly finished leathers in greys and olive greens were everywhere and mixed with distressed copper piping on armchairs and seating. Unlacquered, antiquated brass combined with emerald green marble and animal skull accents. This trend is all about bringing the outside in for a raw, natural, unfinished look.

Trend: ROSE GOLD, ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY

The pastel Pantone Colours were evident in everything from paint to chairs and accessories at IMM, often combined with rose-gold coppers and greys, which hold their position as base colour no.1.

Metallics have progressed from lighting and furniture into statement wallpapers and soft furnishings, such as cushions and rugs woven with light-catching copper thread.

Trend: RETRO HERRINGBONE

Retro 60s furniture is set to continue in its popularity, with dark wood shades appearing across living and dining room furniture.

One trend we noticed was for the retro ‘Herringbone’ tweed pattern, escaping from rugs and throws into dark, statement furniture pieces, such as this stunning grey Herringbone Cabinet by Woood at Cuckooland.

Trend: GEOMETRICS

It was clear that we can expect geometric shapes to be everywhere from tiles to floor coverings this year. Black metal, copper geometric cubes and hexagonal prisms are a huge trend in accessories from pendant lighting to side tables.

With a wide range of patterns and colours falling under the geometric umbrella, this versatile trend can work for any colour scheme and for contemporary or traditional themes.

Kids Trend: SCANDI STYLE SPACE SAVERS

Scandinavian style seems set to continue its domination of children’s interiors, but there is a shift towards space-saving pieces that acknowledge children’s rooms are often the smallest in the house and have to be shared with siblings. The new trend is not to waste a centimetre of space, whether with 2-way desks, multi-functional storage pieces or hidden cabinets –  without compromising on Nordic style statement. Palettes are whites, greys and muted taupes, with minor pops of colour such as mustard, blush pinks and teal.
