Kids should come with a health warning… ‘if you like a tidy house, avoid at all costs!’ Forgive my sweeping and somewhat insensitive generalisation, but I think I can count on one hand the number of tidy kids I know (and mine are definitely not two of them)! I have to confess, I’m not the most tidiest of people either (‘clean’, yes, maybe a little OCD but ‘tidy’ not so much)… but hey we’re not talking about me (phew!).

But encouraging your messy munchkin to keep a tidy bedroom can be a little easier if they have ample storage. As chief bedroom designer (that be you), making the most of every inch is like playing a real-life game of Tetris. Clever storage becomes a valuable asset that can fill an empty space and transform it into a functional and usable zone.

This is why Storage Beds make a great choice for a kid’s bedroom, a clever combination of sleep station and storage all in one neat and compact design – what’s not to love about these space saving beds?!

Parents, if you want some tips on winning the tidy room battle then read on. I have pulled together, from the far corners of the earth, the very best storage beds available to us long suffering, self appointed, chief kids bedroom designers. These fabulous beds will be your best ally in helping to get your kid’s room cleaned up and under control.

What is a Storage Bed?

As the name suggests, Storage Beds are a combination of a sleeping zone and storage, combined into one multi-functional bed. Storage beds come in all shapes and sizes, with the most popular frames being a Mid Sleeper, High Sleeper, Cabin Bed, Loft Bed and Bunk Beds. These higher profile beds offer up space below for plenty of clever storage options.

Storage options can comprise of shelving, drawers, cupboards, desks, storage cubes and wardrobes. Some come as a pre-selected design, others give you the option to choose different elements to create your own combination.

Don’t rule out kids single beds or day beds, as both of these lower profile beds can have options to add an under bed drawer (also known as a trundle) that can either be used for extra storage space or a spare bed.

Choosing the best Storage Bed

The type of storage that you choose will largely depend upon the age of your child and the size of their bedroom.

Younger children would benefit from lower profile beds, such as a single bed or day bed. These can be used from as young as 18 months – 2 years, so your little tot could make the transition straight from their cot.

Higher profile beds such as mid sleepers, loft beds and bunk beds, aren’t usually recommended until approximately 4-6 years old due to their height and being accessed by a ladder, I’d always recommend to check the product detail page for specific advice.

Consider the type of storage that your child needs; if they’re a bookworm, ample shelving would be great, a fashionista would benefit from a wardrobe and drawers, or a study loving student would perhaps love to have their own desk space. Identifying their needs will help you decide which combination of storage solutions will be the best match.

With such an array of storage beds available, I’ve hand picked a few of the top storage beds on offer from Cuckooland to help you decide which storage bed is best for your child.

Storage Beds for Toddlers

As I mentioned, many of the higher profile storage beds won’t be suitable for toddlers due to their height and being accessed by a ladder. That doesn’t mean that your toddler can’t have a cool new storage bed.

Focus on lower profile beds such as the Magnus Single Bed with Trundle Drawer, which is ideal for tots. The uncomplicated design keeps things simple and the trundle drawer is a handy addition! Store extra bedding and toys inside and keep comforters an arms length away.

For a sustainable kids storage bed the Lifetime Kids Cabin Bed with Storage is made from 100% certified sustainable Scandinavian pine. Finished in non-toxic paint, this low profile cabin bed is another great choice for toddlers.

Assembling a Storage Bed

All of the storage beds that are available at Cuckooland will come will full assembly instructions. Here are a few tips for a successful and safe installation of your storage bed:

  • Always refer to the manufacturers guidelines on how to safely assemble the bed.
  • If you are fitting a safety rail, ensure that it is securely fitted.
  • Due to raised design of many storage beds, it is not recommended to fit directly beneath a ceiling light fitting.
  • Never substitute with parts that are not designed for the bed, always contact the customer service team at Cuckooland for replacement parts.
  • Ensure that there is enough clearance for your child to sit up in bed (for taller bed frames) and remember that children grow, so allow room for growth as well!
  • Some storage beds require a particular mattress size, so always check the manufacturers recommended mattress size for the bed.

If you don’t fancy undertaking the installation yourself, many of the storage beds at Cuckooland have the option for professional installation (please refer to the specific product detail pages for further information about installation options), leaving you to sit back and relax…we’ll even take the packaging away for you.
