The Ultimate Guide to Metal Beds

Metal beds are enjoying a resurgence in popularity and are a particularly worthy contender if you’re looking for a cool new bed for your kiddo. You only have to browse through the meticulously styled and covetous kids bedrooms on Pinterest to see that kid’s metal beds just aren’t what they used to be!

If you’re inquisitive to learn more about metal beds before you click “add to basket”, then please read on. I’ll guide you through the features and benefits of these contemporary kids beds and of course highlight a few of my fav designs that are available at Cuckooland.

Are Metal Beds suitable for a Kid’s Bedroom?

Absolutely! Metal bed frames are a brilliant kid’s bed option, offering durability, value for money and an on-trend vibe. You may find that there isn’t as broad a choice as their wooden counterpart, however if you’re looking for a modern kid’s bed, a metal frame could be just the ticket.

Is a Metal Bed frame better than Wood?

Both metal beds and wooden beds come with their own pro’s and con’s, which I have covered in detail in another article; Wooden Beds Vs Metal Beds.

Metal beds and wooden beds are both super options for a children’s bed, ultimately it comes down to personal preference and what bed frame will best compliment the design and styling of your child’s bedroom.

Metal beds are extremely strong, robust and long-lasting (essential ingredients for a great kid’s bed). They are also aesthetically pleasing, often with curved head and foot ends, as seen here with the Boston Metal Kids Single Bed.

Another benefit of metal bed frames is that they are easy to clean (can you remember the last time you cleaned your bed?!), just a swish over with a damp cloth and it’ll look like new!

For those on a limited budget, metal beds offer excellent value for money and are usually a less expensive option than a wooden bed. So if you’re updating your teens room just before they fly the nest or you’ve got more than one bed to buy, metal beds won’t break the bank for mum and dad!

What Size Metal Bed is best for my Child?

When it comes to bed size, there are a couple of important things to consider; what is the size of the bedroom and how long does the bed need to last?

  • Single Bed

If you are looking to buy a bed for a younger child, this may even be their first big kid’s bed, then you are probably safe to opt for a single bed frame.

The size of a single metal frame varies between a UK 90cm x 190cm and an EU 90cm x 200cm. Always double check the bed size specifications (detailed on the product detail pages) as this will determine the size of the mattress required and is particularly important if you are replacing a UK single with a EU single as they do size up 10cm longer!

  • Small Double & Double Bed

For bigger kids and teens, if room allows, you may want to opt for a small double or even a double metal bed. A bigger bed allows room for growing, sprawling and generally lounging around (something that teenagers are exceptionally good at!).

The size of a metal small double frame is 120cm x 200cm and the size of a metal double frame is between 140/150cm x 200cm. Be sure to check the recommended mattress size, particularly if you are replacing an old single bed as you will need to buy a new mattress as well.

Are Metal Beds comfortable?

A comfortable bed is key to your child getting a restful night’s sleep, so I appreciate that finding a bed that is both aesthetically pleasing and enables your child to get those much needed ZZZ’s is of top priority.

Metal beds offer a good foundation for a comfortable night’s sleep, teamed with a supportive mattress and you’re on to a winning formula. If your child is finding that they’re uncomfortable in bed, it may be best to first consider their mattress and whether it’s time for a replacement. Metal beds can be a little prone to squeaks and creaks, here are a few maintenance tips to keep your metal bed in tip top shape;

  1. Prevention is better than cure! When you are assembling your new metal bed frame, ensure that all the nuts and bolts are tightened up properly and give it a little test for squeaks! Metal beds often come with metal washers that sit between the fixing joints, you could replace these with rubber washers if you prefer.
  2. Often it is the headboard that becomes loose over time, this can be easily fixed by moving the bed away from the wall and tightening the screws that hold the headboard onto the frame.
  3. Sometimes a squeak or creak can be caused by the bed being on an uneven surface, this is easily fixed by popping a piece of plywood or cardboard under any corners that need levelling up.
  4. Check the bed for any other issues that may be causing the noise such as a broken slat or even a squeaky mattress!
