7 Reasons to Invest in a Guest Bed
Whether you have an ‘open door’ policy or dread the arrival of unwanted house guests, many of us find ourselves in the position of ‘host’ at some point.
When this happens, you can make life easier for yourself by investing in a guest bed. This way, you’ll be ready to accommodate long-lost relatives or your child’s sleepover friends at a moment’s notice and with minimal set-up required.
At Cuckooland, we have a carefully curated range of day beds and kid’s trundle beds that are perfect for putting up (and putting up with!) the odd visitor or two. Ready to read on and discover the 7 reasons you need a guest bed, plus our pick of the best? Be our guest!
1. Accommodate friends and family
With many of us moving away from our families or friends, to different areas or even different countries, in-person visits are important for staying connected to our loved ones.
If you’re anything like us, you’re much more willing to invite people to stay if you know you have somewhere ready to accommodate them. Plus, your friends will be more likely to say ‘yes’ if they know they’re not going to end up in a sleeping bag on the dining room floor!
The Nikki Bed by Woood is a stylish option that functions as a day bed by – you guessed it – day and can accommodate up to two guests by night, thanks to the optional trundle drawer. It’s available in white or green to suit your space.
2. Host kid's sleepovers
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons to get a guest bed is for sleepovers. Most kids will want their friends to stay over at some point, whether it’s for a summer holiday slumber party, a movie or game night, or to gossip about the latest goings-on at school.
If you’re not blessed with space, we recommend a kid’s trundle bed so the spare bed can be wheeled out when required and pushed back in when not in use. This leaves them with plenty of space to spread out and play during the day.
If you want even more space, choose our Lars Low Cabin Bed, which not only comes with a trundle but also three large storage drawers – perfect for hiding spare bedding or kid’s clutter!
3. Have somewhere for parents to sleep nearby
Some children might find it difficult to wind down and fall asleep at bedtime, especially if they think they’re missing out on activities in the rest of the house.
By adding a trundle bed to your kid’s bedroom, you have a convenient spare bed, next to your child, ready to slide out when they want you to stay until they nod off or comfort them after a nightmare.
Our Vox Evolve Ottoman Day Bed even has lift-up storage for spare bedding, so you can get nice and cosy. It’ll certainly beat curling up in a too-small chair, or lying on the hard floor – the only ‘problem’ we foresee, is that you might fall asleep yourself!
4. Avoid the stress of blow-up mattresses
Who wants the inconvenience and inevitable lightheadedness caused by blowing up a mattress for guests? Not us!
And that’s before you factor in lost pumps, broken connectors and punctures – at least one of which is almost guaranteed to occur, no matter how carefully you put it away last time!
By investing in a proper guest bed that you can leave made up and ready for overnight guests, you can remove this stress from your life, for good. It’s hard to put a price on that.
5. Give your guests a good night's sleep
And let’s face it, no one sleeps well on a blow-up mattress anyway. All that bouncing around and bouncing off – it’s like sleeping on a giant football!
By offering your guests a proper bed with an actual mattress to sleep on, you can help to ensure they get a good night’s sleep and are well-rested in the morning.
A solid 8 hours on our Vox Concept Single Bed – with optional padded headboard – can turn a tired, grouchy guest into a grateful visitor, eager to stay again (sorry!)
6. Save space in a multi-purpose room
If you’ve got enough space for a dedicated guest room with a permanent bed set up, great. There’ll be no prep required the next time Aunt Marge comes to stay, and you can shut the door and forget she’s there (just kidding).
However, many of us have to use our spare room for another purpose, for example, as a home office. In this case, we recommend purchasing a pull-out day bed for guests, so it can double up as extra seating during the day and leave space in the room for other activities.
Our Vipack Pino Day Bed is perfect for daytime lounging and features a pull-out section to transform it into a double bed when guests come to stay.
7. Have the flexibility to move guests
If you have a permanent bed for guests, it can be tricky to move it if required. Not impossible, but you might need to down a few cans of spinach first (a Popeye reference, for our younger readers!)
However, with a pull-out trundle bed, it’s much easier to slide your spare bed to whichever part of the room or house you want your guests to sleep in.
The Fraser Single Storage Bookcase Kids Bed by Cuckooland comes with a trundle drawer on castors, to make it even easier to wheel your guest bed into the perfect location (hopefully far enough away that you can’t hear their snoring!)
