  • How do you start a BBQ fire with wood?

  • A wood-fired grill is really simple to light. Just make sure your firewood is completely dry before you use a lighter to set fire to it - otherwise, you’ll struggle to set it alight. Then, stack the wood into a pyramid shape. Add some scrunched-up newspaper balls within your stack and set them on fire with a lighter.

  • What does wood-fired meat taste like?

  • Grill your BBQ food over firewood and you’ll enjoy a distinctive smoky taste like no other. As the rising smoke from the wood gets trapped within your food, it soaks up all that strong flavour - and brings out all the natural flavours within the food.

  • Charcoal or wood grilling: what’s the difference?

  • There are a few differences between grilling with charcoal or wood. Here are a few factors to bear in mind:

    • Taste - with a wood-fired grill, the type of wood you choose affects the flavour of the meat. This means you can get experimental and try different flavours compared to a coal BBQ. With a charcoal BBQ, you always get the same reliable taste - which is less distinctive than cooking with wood.
    • Time to cook - firewood can take longer to heat up and cook while grilling with charcoal is a faster alternative.
    • Ease - a charcoal BBQ is often easier for beginners or people who want a simpler experience, whereas a wood grill is better for BBQ aficionados.
  • What kind of wood is best for the BBQ?

  • When you choose the type of wood for your BBQ, it all depends on the meat you’re cooking. Woods like maple and applewood work well with lighter meats like chicken or pork, whereas woods like oak are great for meats like beef.

  • How can I stop my wood BBQ from smoking too much?

  • While you do need some smoke, sometimes a BBQ can get a little too smoky. And that can ruin the flavour (and annoy your neighbours!).

    So when it comes to keeping smoke levels to a minimum, here’s what you need to know:

    • Make sure your wood is dry - damp wood can let off too much smoke.
    • Check your grill is clean and has no remnants of the last BBQ before you start cooking.
    • Don’t starve your grill from oxygen - make sure some air can get into the grill, and leave the vents open.
    • If the smoke is black, remove the lid and take your food off the direct heat.
