Whilst traditional cots are designed for babies up to 24 months, modern cot beds have flexible designs that allow you to tinker with the height and structure to convert it into a toddler bed which will accommodate children up to 4 years – even beyond.
In a way, yes. But there is a major difference in that a Cot Bed has the benefit of being able to be converted into a toddler bed once your baby is old enough, where as a Cot cannot convert. A Cot is generally a little smaller, requiring a 60 x 120cm mattress whilst a Cot Bed being a tad larger, requiring a 70 x 140cm mattress. Please ensure you check your room measurements when deciding on the best option.
The perennial question. This can depend on how quickly he or she is settling down at night. Some babies take weeks, others months, others a year or more. To make the transition, our tip (as parents and humble self-styled sleep experts) is to try to encourage your baby to take their afternoon nap in the nursery before leaving them alone for the whole night.

The Lullaby Trust recommend that you buy a new mattress, that should fit the cot bed snugly with not gaps.
