Matching a Nursery Theme to a Cot Bed
A nursery is your newborn’s first bedroom – a space where they’ll play, rest and take in the weird and wonderful world around them.
With so much to gather before their arrival, you may be feeling overwhelmed among the ‘to-buy’ lists. Or maybe you lack confidence in your interior design skills.
Well, designing their nursery can be as easy as starting with a cot – before adding fun themed baby-friendly furniture, colours and whimsical home accessories.
We’ve done all of the hard work for you, so you can grab a cup of tea – plus some yummy biscuits – and explore these four beautiful themes.
1. Pretty in Pink
This vintage style bed is a great starting point for any little princess. Its clean lines, rounded oak legs and neutral oak look premium laminated board frame will make a classic addition to any nursery.
Team it with the Vox Vintage Chest of Drawers in a Choice of Oak or 5 Pastel Colours in ‘Pink’, for a feminine and cosy space. Being from the same range as the cot bed, it’ll continue the room’s chic styling whilst being practical.
Every baby needs bedding – so why not introduce some softness and girly colour with your new purchases. I’m loving the Panda London Bamboo Set of 2 Fitted Cot Bed Sheets in ‘Vintage Pink’ for their incredibly tactile feel (320 thread count). Naturally hypoallergenic, they’re also available in ‘Quiet Grey’ and ‘Pure White’.
2. Fabulous Florals
Although this white, light grey and oak coloured Vox Concept Baby Cot Bed could fit perfectly into any nursery theme, I think it would be blooming marvellous as the beginnings of a floral ‘forest’.
From here, you can add fun ‘on-theme’ accessories that’ll excite your bambino as much as you. They may not be able to walk yet – that’s still to look forward to – but they’ll certainly enjoy rocking in the suitably-floral Levo Baby Rocker in Beech Wood with Hibiscus Flower Cushion. Its Parisian-designed cushion will add a delightful floral print to the nursery, continuing the botanical room scheme. Expect to hear giggles as this rocker follows your baby’s movements and not to mention a few proud visitors’ approvals – instant style points assured.
The colours of the Cotton Ball Lights Pastel LED String Lights are perfect for suggesting a cluster of different coloured flowers. With a generous lead of 378cm (including cable), adding one (or more) to decorate window sills, shelves and wherever else is ‘calling’ out for some fairy lights, can elevate the theme. Imagine the warm glow these 20 LED bulbs create after dusk.
Who says your baby’s clothes can’t also match their floral surroundings? The Cam Cam Copenhagen Sleeping Bag in Pressed Leaves Rose is an ideal way of styling your baby – and their nursery. With a 2.1 TOG rating, it’ll ensure they stay cosy and warm.
3. Beside the Seaside
Mimic the seaside by beginning with the beautifully beachy ‘White’ and pine version of the Obaby Maya Cot Bed – please note, ‘Grey’ is also available. As the Scandi trend continues to grow in popularity, this two-tone design evokes walks by the shoreline whatever the weather outside.
Continue the nautical theme with the coordinating Obaby Maya Double Wardrobe for maximum maritime vibes. Equally Scandi, purchasing both of these stylish pieces of Obaby furniture – plus the Obaby Maya Changing Unit (both pictured below) – will bring an effortless style ‘language’ to your baby’s nursery.
Next…it’s time to get creative with your choice of tonal lighting. Woven from natural jute, the Woood Kace Pendant Light makes a stunning addition to a sea-inspired nursery – especially when you switch on the light and see the room’s walls bathed in geometric shapes.
For the finishing touch, we’d totally ‘under-sand’ if you couldn’t be without the Tutti Bambini Noah Rocking Chair and Pouffe Set – it’s ideal for rocking little ‘uns to sleep after all. Practicality aside, this nursing chair and sea urchin shaped footstool is a great way to continue the peaceful sea-inspired decor. Place in a quiet corner or beside the cot as a designated area to bond with your baby – the hardest decision is choosing between the ‘Natural’ or ‘Grey’ options.
4. Animal Safari
Sometimes you just know that your newborn is bound to ‘go places’. So, why not get ahead and select this Obaby Nika Cot Bed as the perfect base for their jungle or safari themed adventures. Available in four colours (‘Grey Wash’, ‘Grey Wash and White’, ‘Oatmeal’ or ‘Whitewash’), this bed even has teething rails, so will be perfect for teething times.
You can then introduce exciting animal focal points, such as the Bloomingville Water Hyacinth Lion Wall Decor for a friendly take on this ‘king of the jungle’. At 63cm in diameter, it is sure to grab their attention and make a ‘roarsome’ impression.
Or, why not include the trio of Safari Box Kids Mini Animal Wall Heads instead? Manufactured by hand and sure to provide cuddles when your baby is older – they may even inspire a few bedtime stories. Plus, each purchase contributes towards supporting animal sanctuaries in Belgium and Indonesia.
Next, blend these soft toys with natural textiles and neutral shades. The Bloomingville Jute Nature Rug is the perfect example of popular interior designs that are equally perfect for nurseries. At 120cm across, this durable jute rug is bound to ‘travel’ well – into the other rooms in your home. Why resist the urge to buy another for your dining room or lounge?
