How to Create a Fun but Functional Kid's Workstation

Home school lasting a little longer than you’d like? You’re certainly not alone.

As we juggle our full-time jobs with long division and adjectives, it looks as though we need to power through for at least a couple more months. While homeschool might have seemed like a one-off last spring, it’s now just another less-than-ideal part of pandemic life.

If your kitchen table is working overtime, it might be time to create a workstation for your little learners. After all, it’s just a hassle clearing away study materials before you start laying the table for dinner!

Whether your youngsters are practising scribbling or gearing up for their GCSEs, we have plenty of options to choose from. Take a look at these fun and study-friendly furniture pieces…

Find a desk for little learners

If your little one is only just getting to grips with using a pencil, they’ll need a spacious and durable desk to learn. You probably won’t want your kitchen table covered in paint and felt tip – so it’s wise to opt for a little desk that you can easily wipe clean!

And since little ones might not need space for a laptop or a PC yet, you’re free to choose a desk that can simply slot in any room.

Here are my favourite options for little learners:

Vox Match Kids Table & Chairs Set

This adorable table and chair set from Vox is great for practising arts and crafts. It’s lightweight frame means you can easily pop this desk wherever you please – perfect for keeping an eye on your kids while you’re working from home!

This desk even works brilliantly outside for warmer days in the sun, so it really is a versatile option for the home. Just make sure to bring the set back inside when they’re done!

Cute and compact, it’s ideal for slotting away in those smaller bedrooms – without compromising on that all-important learning space. And your little one can choose from eight fun colours to make learning from home that little bit brighter.

Maximize space with a high sleeper...

For older kids, you’ll need enough space for a computer and heaps of revision materials. And since we certainly didn’t plan for this amount of remote learning, your youngster’s bedroom might not be big enough to store all those daily school materials.

If that’s the case, a high sleeper bed will make life much easier. High sleeper beds help you magic space out of nowhere (well, space you’d normally use for a bed). As the beds are elevated, you’ll free up heaps of space for a computer and storage for school supplies.

Take a look at these magnificent space-saving high sleepers:

Harry High Sleeper Bed

If you’re trying to create a fun but functional workstation, the Harry High Sleeper ticks every box. Not only does it boast a super roomy desk, but it also has heaps of storage compartments to tuck away those textbooks and stationery supplies.

It even has a handy notice wire board, so kids can keep their revision notes organized in style. And with plenty of space to hang up clothes too, it really is a winner all round!

Trasman Mont Blanc High Sleeper

This high sleeper is perfect for smaller bedrooms. Combining a bed, a wardrobe, and a large desk all in one, you can create a workstation without taking over the entire room. The desk is big enough to store plenty of schoolwork essentials and provides ample room for a laptop or computer.

While it’s a great workstation option for remote learning, it’s also a fab solution for saving space in general. And with its lovely wood effect, kids will want to show it off on their class video calls!

Parisot Higher Kids High Sleeper Bed with Desk & Wardrobe

This Parisot high sleeper is the ideal workstation. With a roomy desk tucked neatly under the bed, your kids will have plenty of space to knuckle down and tackle their dreaded homework. There’s also plenty of shelves – so you won’t need to find extra space to organise those school essentials.

Even once homeschool finally ends (it has to at some point… right?!), this bed is a gamechanger. With a wardrobe, storage space, and desk rolled into one, it’s perfect for smaller bedrooms. Plus, it’s timeless style means your kids will love it even as they grow up!

...or choose a study-friendly desk

Not so sure about a high sleeper bed? A good old-fashioned desk will do the job. Whether you’re using the spare room or simply have more space in the bedroom, these desks are ideal for creating the perfect workstation.

From traditional to ultra-modern, here are my favourite desks for serious learners:

Koble Juno Smart Height Adjustable Desk with Wireless Charging

This smart Koble desk is serious business. If sitting down all day is leaving your kids feeling restless, you can adjust this into a standing desk in no time. And as soon as they fancy sitting back down, it couldn’t be simpler to readjust.

If that wasn’t clever enough, this desk also charges devices. With a wireless charging surface (and USBs for those non-wireless gadgets), your kids can stay focused without a constantly-draining battery. And it also means you can pop this desk wherever you please – instead of planning the workstation around your plug sockets.

This desk will be crowd-pleaser even when homeschool ends. And considering how amazing this desk is, the whole family will be fighting over it!

The Kiddy Tipi Desk is both practical and stylish. Extending up, the legs and crossbar are great for hanging decorations, lights and artwork! Great for keeping busy kids inspired.

For kids gearing up for exams, this desk is ideal. The desk is roomy enough to get stuck into their books, and features slots for laptops, tech and accessories.

And when they’ve finished studying their socks off, it becomes a quiet spot for crafting, reading and journaling!

Vox Young Users Eco Transforming Desk in Black and White

After a desk that can effortlessly slot into a busy home? This transforming desk by Vox is brilliantly adjustable around your space.

With sliding cabinets, you can expand this desk to suit your child’s needs. You can slide it to the left, right, into the middle, or push it apart – whatever makes sense for you! As this desk can grow into a big workspace, it’s ideal for siblings or study buddies (once we’re all allowed to mix, of course).

And once your kids are done learning, you can shrink this desk back down to size. You can even roll it away out of sight – so you’ll only need to think about school work during work hours!

...or save space with a compact 2 in 1

Louis Mid Sleeper Cabin Bed

For smaller bedrooms, studying from home isn’t ideal. As kids need plenty of space to learn, you might find you just don’t have the room to set up a dedicated workstation.

This Louis Mid Sleeper Cabin Bed should put an end to your space-saving worries. With a clever pull-out desk, you don’t need to find the space to create a permanent workstation. You can simply pull out the desk when your child needs to learn – and slot it away as soon as they’re done.

And since the storage cabinet can store heaps of school supplies and learning materials, you can keep your child’s bedroom spick and span, too.
