Cuckooland’s Nursery Furniture Guide Infographic

When to buy

It’s a good idea to start preparing the nursery from around the second scan (20 weeks). It’s worth considering that some nursery furniture is made to order and can take up to twelve weeks to arrive. This brings you to just before the third trimester (29-40 weeks).

What to consider when buying

  • Complies with the European Safety Standard BS EN 716-1:2017
  • Produced by a reputable manufacturer
  • Instructions on converting from cot to bed if this is a feature
  • All safety elements are included within the instructions
  • A guarantee is preferable

Mattress

  • A cot mattress should carry the BSI number BS 1877-10:1997.
  • The mattress fits the specific dimensions of your chosen cot
  • The mattress needs to be brand new for all newborns

Storage

  • Should comply with the correct EU Safety Standard number
  • Freestanding storage units should be fixed to a wall
  • Storage units should be sturdy
  • Ideally, storage furniture should come with a guarantee
  • Compatible with baby proofing accessories

Things to Avoid

  • Incorrect positioning: ensure cots and cotbeds are away from windows, blinds, curtains or wires
  • Freestanding furniture that cannot be affixed to a wall
  • Loose sheets, blankets or duvet within the cot
  • Unsafe mattress space: there should be less than two fingers of space between the mattress to cot frame
