King or Super King Bed, Which is Best?

It might seem like there’s an obvious answer to this question, but, once you start weighing up the pros and cons of King Size and Super King Size Beds, a decision you once thought would be simple, in reality, isn’t so straightforward.

Finding the right bed for you can be the difference between a fantastic night’s sleep, waking up feeling refreshed and ready for the day or a night tossing, turning and getting a good view of your ceiling, but not much else. On average we replace our beds and mattresses every 7 to 10 years, so when selecting the perfect sized bed, there is a lot at stake!

It’s time for a ‘Battle of the Beds’ to settle this once and for all! Let’s take these bed sizes through a few rounds – take a look through our checklist and see which bed size comes out on top. 1. Price and Budget

Vox Nature Bed with Solid Headboard

Starting you off with one of the most important considerations when selecting a new bed, know your budget!

Most often king-size beds are the more budget-friendly option. As they’re more compact when compared to their super king-size counterparts, fewer materials are needed to construct a king-size bed. And when there are fewer materials needed, the price is a lot more appealing.

If cost isn’t a problem, then a Super King Size Bed is well within your reach! The Scandi-inspired Vox Nature Bed with Solid Headboard comes available in 4 sizes, from small double to super king. With a simple design, we’ve tried to keep the costs simple too. The difference in price for each isn’t all that noticeable once you weigh up the other pros and cons!

2. Size and Layout

Hambleden Spindle Bed

As you already know, the main difference between a king and a super king is the extra centimetres! Using the Hambleden Spindle Bed as an example, the King takes a 150 x 198cm mattress, whereas the Superking offers a sleep space of 180 x 200cm. Those extra 30cms in width make a huge difference, especially when you’re sharing with a partner! You can enjoy stretching out, you’re less likely to wake one another as you’re sleeping and if you have a little one or a pet that joins you during the night, there’s plenty of room for you all to rest.

But with that extra sleep space, you’ll, unfortunately, be losing floor space. Your bed is essential, but so are wardrobes, dressers and bedside tables. If you can fit in a super king bed and still have enough space for everything else, you’re winning, but if your square footage is on the smaller size, a king-size might be the better option for you. You’d still have an extra 15cm when compared to a double bed so it’s not all bad!

3. Bedding and Mattresses

Where Super-king beds are greater in size, this also means the bedding will need to be too!

The bohemian Beatnik Four Poster Bed comes available in a choice of colours and sizes. The mattress needed for a Super King measures an extra 30cm in width. Not only will you need an extra-large mattress, but you’ll need extra large duvet covers, blankets, sheets and super king pillows to fit.

Where super king beds are usually more expensive in the first place, the total starts to tot up. If you don’t want to put a price on the perfect night’s sleep, then don’t let this put you off! This beautiful bed will put a bounce back in your step no matter the size you go for!

4. Style

As you’ve seen many of our beds come available in a range of sizes, so the style is never an issue! From ultra-modern to the more traditional, King Size and Super King Beds are equally matched.

Something to consider though, the larger the bed, the more imposing it can look and feel in your bedroom. The Vox Simple Customisable Super King Size Ottoman Bed can be tailored to suit your interiors. If you’ve got the space for a Super King Size, but you’re worried the frame might dominate your room, select lighter colours to trick the eye.

The frame, headboard and legs are all available in a choice of neutral shades ready for you to customise. Pair with lightweight bedding and fabrics, open storage, mirrors and area rugs and create balance in your bedroom!

5. Storage Space

You’d have thought Super King beds win this one… but not so! Check out the Vox 4 You King 4 Poster Bed with Storage & Shelves.

Built into the headboard a full-width bookcase awaits all of your favourite reads. Below and surrounding the bed frame there’s extra shelving for books, movies and more. And if you opt for the raised mattress mechanism this space-saving superstar turns into an ottoman bed, making use of the generous storage below the mattress. Easily access and store bedding, shoes and out-of-season clothing and make better use of the space your bed takes up!

If storage is a deciding factor for you, select a bed that offers up smart ways of utilising the areas available.

6. Co-sleeping

If you’re a parent or pet owner, you’ll often find your sleep space gets invaded! One minute you’ll be counting sheep and the next counting the extra guests that have taken it upon themselves to join you. Super King Beds are great when it comes to co-sleeping or bed-sharing. The extra-large mattress means you’ll all get your fair share of space to stretch out!

Having said this, don’t give up on a King Size just yet. The Vox Simple Customisable King Size Ottoman Bed is a great choice for new or expecting parents! This innovative design can be paired with the coordinating co-sleeper cot, providing a safe space for you and your baby to sleep and plenty or room for you to starfish. If your bedroom won’t allow for a super king, but you’ve decided on co-sleeping, this is the one for you!

7. Delivery and Assembly

Something we all forget in the excitement of selecting a new bed is the delivery and assembly. It’s the part we’d all rather avoid thinking about, so we can’t be blamed! But when it comes to beds, these furniture designs are on the big side and if your bedroom isn’t on the ground floor, navigating stairs, lifts, corridors and loft rooms with extra-large frames can become a real problem.

Thankfully most of our beds here at Cuckooland come ready to be assembled, so it’s made a little easier for you. We also offer installation on many of our adult beds, so you don’t have to worry about this part. The Vox 4 You Bed with Raised Mattress Mechanism can be fitted together by our friendly team while you pick out your pyjamas for later! And the Swyft Bed 02 is a bed in a box so getting it up to your bedroom is never a problem no matter the final size you select. King Size or Superking, we have you covered here at Cuckooland!
