There are several possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/bedwetting-causes\">medical reasons for bedwetting<\/a>, all of which are treatable and none of which are your child\u2019s fault. The most common causes are:<\/p><ul><li>Your child\u2019s bladder can\u2019t hold all the urine they make at night, perhaps because their body is making too much, their bladder is too small, or the sphincter muscles holding the urine in aren\u2019t strong enough yet.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Your child doesn\u2019t wake up when they need to go to the toilet in the night, as the signals between their brain and bladder haven\u2019t fully matured yet. Or, they may feel the urge to go, but dream that they are already at the toilet (we\u2019ve all been there!)<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Your child is feeling stressed or anxious. Contrary to popular opinion, psychological problems are not thought to be a cause of bedwetting in the majority of cases. In his book <em>Getting to Dry<\/em>, Max Maizels, M.D., a Professor of Paediatric Urology, says, \u2018Children who bedwet are no more likely to show psychological disturbance than their nonwetting peers\u2019.<br \/><br \/><p>However, it is possible that if your child is not sleeping due to stress, they might sleep more deeply than usual when they do sleep and not wake up when they need the toilet.<\/p><\/li><li>There may be an underlying health condition. Sometimes, bedwetting can be a symptom of another health condition, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI), constipation or type 1 diabetes. Take your child to the GP if their bedwetting continues after the age of 5 or if they display any other symptoms.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39e020f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"39e020f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How to Stop Bedwetting<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e59baa7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e59baa7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In most cases, bedwetting is something children grow out of naturally as they mature, and their bladder grows and muscles strengthen. However, there are things you can do to help with bedwetting:<\/p><ul><li>Make sure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day, but don\u2019t give them drinks in the hour before bed.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Avoid giving your child drinks containing caffeine, especially in the afternoon and evening, as <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.usu.edu\/nutrition\/research\/understanding-caffeine-vs-kids\">caffeine is a diuretic<\/a> and increases urine production.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Encourage your child to go to the toilet immediately before bed. If they\u2019re reluctant, use a reward system to motivate them.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Make sure they can get to the toilet easily during the night. Leave a night light on to light the way to the bathroom and remove any obstacles in their path.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Reassure them that it\u2019s not their fault and you aren\u2019t angry with them. Is Bedwetting Hereditary?<\/strong><br \/>Bedwetting is genetic: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/bedwetting\/\">NHS advises<\/a> that bedwetting often runs in families. If a child wets the bed, the condition may also have affected their parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle.<\/p><p><strong>3. Can Bedwetting be a Sign of ADHD?<\/strong><br \/>Sometimes, bedwetting is linked to autism or ADHD in children. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/en\/articles\/adhd-and-bedwetting\">Understood<\/a>, a charity that supports people who learn and think differently, children with ADHD are approximately 3 times as likely to wet the bed than children without the condition.<\/p><p>It is not known for certain why this is, but it may be because they struggle to recognise bodily cues or due to a delay in the development of their central nervous system.<\/p><p><strong>4. Should I take my Child to the Doctor about Bedwetting?<\/strong><br \/>Most children grow out of bedwetting naturally as they mature.
